ICOS–Pilipinas Joins the Nation and the World in Celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Every October, the world turns pink in a united call to action against breast cancer—a disease that continues to affect millions of women across the globe. This month serves as a reminder of the importance of awareness, prevention, early detection, and continuous support for those battling the illness. In this spirit, the International Cardio-Oncology Society – Pilipinas (ICOS–Pilipinas) proudly joins the nation and the international community in celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month, honoring survivors, supporting patients, and advocating for holistic healthcare.
While breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women worldwide, survival rates have improved significantly over the years, thanks to advances in early diagnosis and modern treatment. However, these successes bring new challenges that must not be overlooked—particularly the impact of cancer therapies on heart health. Chemotherapy, targeted therapies, radiation, and hormonal treatments, while lifesaving, can increase the risk of cardiotoxicity—damage to the heart muscle or its function. As more patients live beyond cancer, the importance of addressing these cardiovascular effects has become a crucial aspect of long-term survivorship care.
This is where cardio-oncology plays a vital role. The field bridges the disciplines of cardiology and oncology, ensuring that cancer patients receive not only effective cancer therapy but also vigilant cardiovascular monitoring and management. The ICOS–Pilipinas, as the Philippine chapter of the International Cardio-Oncology Society, has been at the forefront of promoting this collaborative approach. Its mission is to strengthen awareness, education, and research on the intersection of cancer and heart disease among Filipino healthcare providers and the public.
In joining this year’s Breast Cancer Awareness campaign, ICOS–Pilipinas highlights three key messages:
1. Early Detection Saves Lives — and Hearts.
Regular breast self-examinations, mammography, and prompt medical consultation remain essential in detecting cancer early. Similarly, early cardiovascular assessment before and during cancer therapy helps prevent serious heart complications.
2. Comprehensive Care Requires Collaboration.
Breast cancer management is no longer confined to oncologists alone. Cardiologists, internists, nurses, nutritionists, and rehabilitation specialists must work hand-in-hand to deliver integrated care that addresses both cancer control and cardiovascular wellness.
3. Empowerment Through Education and Advocacy.
ICOS–Pilipinas continues to conduct educational activities, webinars, and partnerships with hospitals and medical societies to spread awareness about cardio-oncology. Empowering healthcare providers and patients with the right information ensures better outcomes and improved quality of life.
As the world observes Pink October, ICOS–Pilipinas stands in solidarity with breast cancer warriors, survivors, and their families. The Society recognizes their courage and resilience and reaffirms its commitment to advancing research and practices that safeguard not only survival but also the heart health of every patient.
Dr. Raul L. Lapitan, President of ICOS–Pilipinas together with the Board of Officers and Directors, underscore the importance of this advocacy: “We envision a future where no patient has to choose between beating cancer and keeping their heart healthy. Through cardio-oncology, we make that possible.”
Together, let us continue to spread awareness, inspire hope, and promote compassion-driven medicine. May the pink ribbon remind us all—not just of the fight against breast cancer—but of the shared responsibility to nurture both life and heart health.
