On April 26, 2025, the Philippine medical community witnessed a historic and transformative moment with the successful launch of the International Cardio-Oncology Society – Pilipinas (ICOS-Pilipinas) at the prestigious Makati Diamond Residences. The event was graced by an impressive turnout of over 120 medical specialists, with the majority composed of cardiologists (68%), cardio-oncologists (18%), hematologists (9%), and medical oncologists (5%). The overwhelming presence of these distinguished experts signifies the growing recognition of cardio-oncology as a vital and evolving field in Philippine healthcare.

The launch of ICOS-Pilipinas marks a major step forward in the country’s efforts to bridge the gap between cardiovascular and cancer care. As cancer survivorship continues to rise, so too does the burden of cardiovascular disease among these patients. ICOS-Pilipinas was created in response to the urgent need for a unified, multidisciplinary platform that addresses this complex intersection. The society aims to foster collaboration, spearhead research initiatives, advocate for patient-centered care, and develop clinical guidelines that are specifically relevant to the Filipino population.

The ceremony opened with inspiring messages from founding members, who shared the vision and mission of ICOS-Pilipinas: to promote excellence in cardio-oncology through education, research, and clinical practice. In their remarks, they emphasized the society’s role not only in advancing the science of cardio-oncology but also in building a collaborative community where cardiologists and oncologists work hand-in-hand to deliver the highest quality of care.

A highlight of the event was the ceremonial unveiling of the official ICOS-Pilipinas logo, a powerful emblem symbolizing the unity of heart and cancer care — now proudly serving as the symbol of the society’s mission and commitment.

Key moments included the recognition of the founding members who tirelessly worked to make the vision of the society a reality. The program also featured a series of lectures and discussions on the evolving landscape of cardio-oncology, highlighting both local challenges and the promising future ahead.

The breakdown of attendees demonstrated the strong multidisciplinary foundation upon which ICOS-Pilipinas will be built:

  • 68% were practicing cardiologists,
  • 18% were cardio-oncologists,
  • 9% were hematologists, and
  • 5% were medical oncologists.

This broad representation reflects the collective commitment of the different specialties to advancing cardio-oncology care in the Philippines.

Another significant highlight of the event was the presentation of ICOS-Pilipinas’ Strategic Direction for the Next 12 Months, anchored on four foundational pillars encapsulated in the acronym CARE:

  • Collaboration: Strengthening partnerships among cardiologists, oncologists, researchers, and allied health professionals locally and internationally.
  • Advocacy: Raising awareness about cardio-oncology among healthcare providers, patients, policymakers, and the general public.
  • Research: Promoting and supporting clinical research initiatives that address the unique cardiovascular needs of Filipino cancer patients.
  • Education: Providing continuous professional education and training to enhance the capabilities of healthcare providers involved in cardio-oncology care.

These four pillars will guide ICOS-Pilipinas’ programs, initiatives, and partnerships as the society moves forward in its mission to integrate cardiovascular and cancer care seamlessly for the benefit of patients across the country.

The launch was not just a celebration; it was a call to action—a call to work together across disciplines, to break silos, and to place the Filipino patient at the center of all efforts. With the successful establishment of ICOS-Pilipinas, the future of cardio-oncology in the Philippines is bright, promising a new era where the heart health of every cancer patient and survivor will be safeguarded with utmost dedication and expertise.

As ICOS-Pilipinas moves forward, it invites all members of the healthcare community to join in this journey—to collaborate, innovate, and make a lasting impact in the lives of patients. The spirit of unity and shared purpose that filled the halls of Makati Diamond Residences on April 26, 2025, will undoubtedly serve as the foundation for all the groundbreaking work that lies ahead.

Together, we move forward — for the heart, for the fight against cancer, and for the Filipino people.
